Connor Homes is leading a significant change in the residential building industry
by blending the current technologies of offsite building, in a climate controlled
environment, with a keen eye towards designing historically accurate homes using
panelized construction techniques. This change is what led CG Nichols Builders to
be building the "New Old House".
In an era where the MacMansion was appearing to take a foothold, where size and
splash were the apparent desired end product, Connor Homes has chosen to fall back
to an age where quality came before quantity, and where ego is checked at the door.
They have chose to work with what history has proven to be beautiful, well proportioned
detailing of the Greek Revival, Colonial and Federal styles of Architecture. Using
the tried and true proportion of trim detailing and massing of many of the traditional
New England Architectural styles that so many people associate as the true heart
and soul of New England.
At their state of the art manufacturing facility in Middlebury, Vermont, Connor
is able to provide design services to custom design a house or modify one of their
existing plans, as well as house materials and construct all wall panels and detail
trimwork. The panelized process is somewhere between a site built home and a modular
home, tending to be much closer to a piece by piece custom detailing of a site built
home. The panelized home has the benefit of having wall panels and all of the exterior
trim constructed and precut at the factory which speeds up construction time and
assures better quality due to the fact that they can construct during inclement
weather.
The panelized manufacturing process starts with the dimensional framing being constructed
for wall panels and all trim cut at Connor's facility in Middlebury. The panels
are set on pallets and shrink wrapped and then delivered to the job site once the
foundation has been completed by CG Nichols Builders. CG Nichols crews erect the
exterior building shell in a fraction of the time that a traditional stick-built
house would take. The fast erection time also minimizes the building materials to
weather and provides a weather tight envelope so that interior finishes can be started
immediately. CG Nichols then completes construction of the house, associated sitework
for site utilities (water and sewer) and landscaping. Chris is the homeowner contact
from day one and coordinates everything for the construction of your home. In this
unique relationship CG Nichols Builders and Connor Homes can combine to be a one
stop design/build team. A great combination we like to call, "design by committee",
where homeowner, contractor and designer collaborate from the beginning to put together
and implement a plan.
Upon meeting, Chris and Mike Connor found quickly that they shared a great deal
in vision and life experiences. They both started their career in the real estate
business, and were drawn to the overall tangibility of building and more specifically
the classic beauty of traditional New England Architecture. After their first project
together, which was a matching addition to a classic Center Hall Colonial, they
both knew that a long term relationship had just been born.
